Going 160M

Last Updated on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 12:13 AM Written by N1WQ Wednesday, December 8, 2010 12:11 AM

With my original dipole, there was no way I could work on 160M. However my new sloper is supposed to work on this band. For the first I was very skeptical about it though. Still I was able to tune it for 160M, although in very narrow range.

Bad luck cards

Apparently USPS lost my QSL cards I’ve sent to ARRL buro in September. I’ve noticed the check I had sent is still not received by my bank, so I sent e-mail to ARRL staff yesterday. They responded quickly: no recent entries from N1WQ. Nice… I’ve used priority mail, so theoretically the package should be trackable within USPS, but the problem is I did not keep the receipt.

The snow storm

Last Updated on Sunday, November 14, 2010 9:22 PM Written by N1WQ Sunday, November 14, 2010 9:20 PM

Friday night we got the first snow: 7 inches of extremely sticky wet stuff. Overnight it accumulated everywhere, including the beam and both wire antennas, and of course completely detuned them. On Saturday morning the center of the dipole was as low as 10 ft above the ground, so heavy it was (one of dipole ends has counterweight system allowing such movements). Using long pole with the broom at the end I cleaned up the dipole and lower part of the sloper. I have to do this one more time later that day. The sloper then worked just fine on Saturday night. The beam stayed detuned until Sunday morning.
